With the holidays approaching, many of you may enjoy decorating your house with lights, snowmen, nutcrackers, and for many, the centerpiece of holiday home decorating is the tree. As beautiful as Christmas trees are, it is important to remember that they can potentially be a fire hazard in your home. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) reported that between 2007-2011 there were 230 home fires each year that were caused by Christmas trees, which shows just how important it is to keep some safety tips in mind when you are decorating this holiday season. Below is a video of “Christmas Tree Fire Safety Tips” from the NFPA.
Tips from the Above Video
1. Choose a tree with fresh green needles that do not fall off when touched.
2. Cut two inches from the base of the trunk before placing your tree in a stand.
3. Make sure the tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source (ex. fireplace, heat lamp, candles, lights).
4. Use lights that have been tested by a laboratory.
5. Dispose of your tree when it has dried, dry trees are a fire hazard!
